The Nightingale is the latest film from Jennifer Kent, director of The Babadook (2014). In this film, the location is Tasmania and the year is 1825. A young Irish convict woman seeks revenge for a terrible act of violence once inflicted upon her family. The story sounds interesting and the film seems to gorgeously recreate the past setting. In “brutality” on display, The Nightingale reminds me of a very-hard-to-watch film Brimstone (2017) with Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning, meaning that this film will also not be for everyone.
Looks good to me!

It was a decent movie..but I’m just pre-warning you.. it was so brutal it shook me to the core of my being.. There has only been one other movie that ever did this to me and that was Calvary,, the perfornances are wonderful, but it’s not for the faint of heart. I honestly don’t think I could ever watch it again.

The Babadook was a great debut feature and curious to see if Kent’s long-awaited follow-up can deliver the goods. As you say, The Nightingale may not be as mainstream as and looks like she’s gone with a fairly unknown the cast. The lead actress kind of reminds me of Alicia Vikander, sort of a younger sister, if that makes sense!

This movie is fantastic, and an interesting look at a part of Australian history. Kent did a ton of research she said in the Q&A and it shows. As Peggy said it is brutal, but it needs to be as that was a brutal time not just for indigenous peoples but pretty much anyone who wasn’t a British officer. I really like that Kent really changed things up after The Babadook, its one of those films I’d almost call epic, just due to the scope of the thing and distance travelled… with no car. I loved it and I can’t say it shook me at all, but it is very graphic and I guess maybe unsettling at times.
And see it on an IMAX screen if you can, it looks incredible!!!

I am glad to hear such a positive feedback on the film, because I was afraid it really was too harrowing to the point of being totally unrealistic. Thanks very much for stopping by!

Oh, it feels very realistic. Saddening for me to see such an ugly period in our history, but few films explore it as vastly as this. I can’t wait for its general release!

This was so good. It was super violent and difficult to watch but definitely not gratuitous violence. As a (half) Australian it felt like it hit me right in the heart, definitely worth watching
